Honeymoon

Eva and Carlos's marriage is a wreck. A couple in ruins. Only Jonás, the son they had together, keeps them together. But united may not be the right word. After all, Jonás has just died in a senseless accident thousands of miles from home, in the United States, during a visit to his paternal grandparents. Or, for that matter, the almost physical need to repatriate their son's body. Or, only the almost physical need to lose sight of each other, and forever. But Eva and Carlos, on top of the wreckage of their marriage, have no money and no life insurance. And repatriating a corpse costs a fortune. Without the financial means to bring Jonás back, but with their hearts set on it, Eva and Carlos embark on a desperate journey across the country, and through their own emotional lives, in which they will try to get the money they need to retrieve their son's body at any cost, aware that it will be the last thing they do together. But together may not be the right word. Aware that it will be the last thing they do with the same goal. And so, selling door-to-door complete DVD collections of the best cartoon series of the 80s - collections stolen from a dead man and taking Carlos back to a time when everything was simple - the couple plunge into a whirlwind of events, each as unpredictable as the next. As extreme, as strange, as inevitable as, for example, stealing from a dead man when you're not sure whether you've killed him yourself. Necessary, too, in spite of everything, for they will eventually achieve their goal: to repatriate Jonas' corpse, even at the cost of abandoning almost everything else along the way. Only the accidental and mute entrance into their lives of Sayaka, an eight-year-old Chinese girl they may have kidnapped, will give their desolate hearts the drops of magic needed to transform their path of destruction into something resembling the hope of a new beginning. Only if police chief inspector Rebeca Santos can't uncover all the mysteries of their strange story in time...

Cherry Juice

What is left when the war is over ? Cherry Juice traces this question through a wild and unpredictable night in Sarajevo when Selma, a young Bosnian screenwriter, shares an adventurous encounter with a German actor named Niklas. Cherry Juice, which takes the viewer from Hamburg to Sarajevo, tells the story of two people for whom cinema means everything. Selma, a Bosnian screenwriter from Sarajevo, has written a screenplay processing her experiences as a refugee in Germany from the Yugoslav War. But four weeks before the shoot is scheduled to begin, the project is canceled. While drowning her frustrations in alcohol, Selma fails to inform all of the crew members of the shoot’s cancellation, while an Hamburg-based actor named Niklas is preparing his role for the film—only learning upon his arrival in Sarajevo that the film is no more. Spontaneously, he decides to stay in Sarajevo, where he crosses paths with Selma, and their worlds collide: the pessimistic, reserved Bosnian and the optimistic, charming German, both connected by the same dream of making movies. They spend New Year's Eve together and experience an exciting and life-changing night; both eventually finding salvation in a deep moment of honesty and sharing with one another.

Paint Her Red

In this short film, written and directed by Bella Thone, Bella delivers an unapologetic narrative, both painful and beautiful, exploring the journey of women. With vulnerability and strength, Bella uses haunting visuals and an assembly of melancholic prose and poetry, allowing the audience a more intimate peek into a women’s pre-destined journey. Bella writes, “Smile. Stay quiet and if you’re thinking of standing up for yourself, shh….no one can hear you…But don’t worry, you look pretty. Even when they’re saying something good, they’re saying something bad”. In a world ruled by men, women learn at a very young age, what they can and can’t do. The simple freedom of a woman wanting the best future for herself is jeopardized by a man’s curse of the unthinkable circumstances women face in order to achieve it. Bella writes, “How much of myself was worth everything I wanted. I did everything you ask. I gave you all of myself”. By the time we enter adulthood, we struggle with the worth and power we both knowingly and unknowingly give to men. As long as we dance, sing and behave the way men taught us, women are manipulated to believe that the man will reward us with our freedom. Unfortunately, the acceptance from men comes at a grave price. Women must become chameleons, constantly changing while playing a fool to bigger fools. Bella writes, “this character, they painted red. make believe I can. Sleep at night, I cannot.” To be heard, women surrender to the constant fight to be seen and heard as humans instead of being degraded to the status of a mere object. “Further., I hear that soft spoken voice. I fight for her. The relief as the blood pours down my face it drips in my mouth and for the first time I can taste freedom. I’m no longer scared to say no or to admit I want blood”. Bella writes, “A piece left for myself. You can’t take it all. The answer is NO”. And when HER character rips the ungoldly flesh of men off of her, she hears applause, still painted red. “And here I am. Bruised, but not broken”.

Jasna Kouhoutova
