The Secret of Maria Makinang

The film is built around the fleeting concept of time and the fragility of our relationships when that concept is distorted. Because Maria only appears whenever there's a full moon, her unique perspective frames her world; a world where what seems like only a week actually takes place over a year. The agony of time is magnified, carried by those who care for her. Central to this exploration is the theme of sexual awakening, portrayed through Danilo's evolving desires and maturity, elements that deeply influence the shifting dynamics between him and Maria. Their relationship, initially innocent, gradually becomes imbued with complexity and yearning as Danilo navigates the turbulent waters of adolescence into adulthood. I've actually written this story several years ago because it was inspired by my grandfather. Before I was born my family used to live in Baguio. When I was a young boy we moved to Manila but every year we would still go back to our house in Baguio. And every year when we would go back he'd always tell me the same thing: "sobrang dami nang nagbago" changes akin to the ones Maria perceives in her sporadic glimpses of the world. The film reflects on how transformations within us and around us can feel both swift and staggering. In "Ang Lihim ni Maria Makinang" these reflections are visceral experiences of love, loss, and longing. The story is told with a deliberate sensitivity to these themes. Maria embodies the brief moments of awareness when we're taken over by conscience, guilt, and understanding that is punctuated by seeing all that has changed in front of us. It is a story about our relationship with time and how the people we love drastically change or remain excruciatingly the same. As we grow into bodies that yearn for more from our relationships, how much of that innocent affection.
