Synopsis : “M... and F..., a mother and daughter living on the margins of society, long to escape their traditional life. However, the subject of death is ever-present in their conversations. What do they truly mean by ‘leaving’?”
Death is a universal subject that, in general, inspires fear. For me, it is the death of others that is truly distressing (more specifically, that of my close circle, which consists of very few people, including Marion (co-writer and co-director)). For both of us, this fear is so rational that it becomes irrational. It only manifests as endless thoughts of the worst possible scenarios, and before this project, I had found no other way to externalize this anxiety. The idea for this short film came to me after listening to “Las damas que pasan” from the soundtrack of Emilia Pérez. Marion once told me, “At my funeral, I want this song, because we all have a woman who has marked our lives.” After listening to it on repeat, I began imagining us performing in a short film that addresses death in an absurd way. The goal of this project is to externalize the anxieties generated by death through eccentric and offbeat characters (much like ourselves, to some extent, with Marion). The short film is divided into three parts. It opens with the relationship between the mother and the daughter, Marion and me. They are extremely close, living in their own world : no scene shows them apart. They speak about escaping and about death, giving subtle clues about the themes that will unfold. The second part centers on the mother’s funeral, accompanied by a song performed by me, for Marion. The scene is abrupt and moving, designed to shock the audience: why would the mother be dead? The final part of the short film offers an open ending. The two women are in the Bardenas desert, evoking landscapes reminiscent of Texas, fleeing in a car. Here lies the ambiguity: has the mother, supposedly dead, staged her death to escape with her daughter? This was our initial idea, referencing Thelma & Louise, the girls’ favorite film, which appears in the script as a fantasy of the life they long for. However, we eventually realized that the ending could also be interpreted more metaphorically : has the daughter joined her mother in death? Are they on their way to paradise? Or is the daughter dreaming, and is it all happening in her mind? We chose to preserve this ambiguity in order to leave room for interpretation, with the intention of suggesting that departure, or death, is not an end.
