Synopsis : Parky is a parking ticket machine that serves the Sunshine Parking Structure in downtown Chicago. Stationary and permanently walled between the elevator and the ground floor entrance, Parky is relegated to the life of an observer, watching through his singular fish-eye security lens. Despite his lack of vocabulary and ability to communicate, we begin to understand his longing to feel and do the things that people can. We swell and flex with Parky as he tracks a blossoming young love, grieves with a recent widow, and is eventually faced with a choice, break free from his programming or remain forever a witness.
The Greenway Self Park at the corner Kinzie and Clark St. in Chicago’s River North neighborhood is home to a parking ticket machine that was the inspiration for this short film. My office was across the street from this structure for over a decade and I’d interact with the machine almost daily. It’s housed in a little windowless vestibule and had way more dialogue programmed into its script than necessary. I’d often ride the elevator thinking about the engineer who designed the machine and gave it so much to say, and about the machine and its life sentence to stare at a brick wall repeating the same 8 pre-programmed lines over and over again. They say toll booth operators suffer from disproportionate levels of depression because they sit in a box and watch the world go by. I think all of us, artists, writers, or anyone, are just looking to heard and understood. Like Parky, the circumstances we find ourselves in limit that ability, whether they’re geographic limitations, limitations of mobility, autonomy, or our own abilities to communicate. STRUCTURE is the story of Parky trying to be heard.
